There are so many things to love about Hong Kong, for me one of them is the seamless mix of young and old, in both architecture and culture. One of my favourite areas that showcases this is in Central, behind Queens st. Pottinger St is famous for it’s vibrant street market, showcasing the best in fancy dress costumes and the current holidays decorations. But running through Pottinger is Wellington, my favourite! During my three years the street scape has slowly changed in a way which I love, but that also saddens me. The local people are what really makes this city and they are slowly being moved aside for new business; which don’t get me wrong I fully support but I wish there was a way we could have both!
With this in mind I took a walk down a part of Wellington street, to photograph how it currently looks before the next set of changes takes place.
A long look down Wellington St
From the top of the block, new kid Ta Korea, head down the stairs to try this hidden gem
Finally some great sandwiches in the city!
Plants for sale in the centre of the city...
Cali Mex, the new Mexican chain taking the city by storm, knows a good position when it sees one! The upstairs setting offers a great view of the street, otherwise unseen.
Nha Trang, this is a stalwart favourite in Hong Kong. Vietnamese at it's best, and is now a chain, but the one on Wellington St always has a LONG line from around midday each day. It's a must try!
Wang Fu, a Michelin restaurant...
MANA, if you follow my instagram account you will know this place is one of my all time favourite places to eat in Hong Kong!
Is it really??
An old school regular on the street, lets hope it can hold on to it's spot...
I love that these multi purpose stores sit along side new hip cafes, like Mana's new juice bar
Wah Fung since 1941!!!
Leung Pui Kee locksmith, I wonder how long he has been here, and how much longer he will be able to keep this spot?
What a wonderful old facade
The Graham St market which run through Wellington, ear marked for removal in the next few months, too sad.
Along side Mana's new Juice bar, down Gutzlaff lane is a local food stall. Hand making dumplings in the morning ready to sell for lunch. I guess they go by a different set of food handling laws..
Taking on the burger business in a big way, The Butchers Club burger is now on Wellington, a burger doesn't get much better than this!
This really is just a small sample of life on Wellington St, if you are in Hong Kong take the time to explore it yourself, and be taken off, up and down the lanes that run from it, there is so much to experience, old new and emerging!
